Aero package: from CFD to carbon
The Aerodynamics subsystem made big strides in 2025 in design capability, simulation workflow and manufacturing quality.
Design in Siemens NX
Siemens NX is now our primary CAD platform for aerodynamic design. It lets us build a parametric surfaced model ready for CFD (computational fluid dynamics), integrate our own custom aerofoil profiles, and control their shape and placement on the car.
A better CFD workflow
Improved mesh efficiency means more accurate simulations using less computing power. We can now simulate the accumulator cooling fans and see their effect on the airflow over the undertray. A new cornering simulation is in development which will produce a full aero map, showing the drivers and vehicle dynamics team how downforce, and so grip, changes through different corners.
Making the moulds
Our sponsor Centre Line Patterns CNC-cut the foam base for the nosecone mould. New members helped reinforce the surface with fibreglass, fill the weave, then spray several coats of epoxy-based primer for a smooth, high-quality surface ready for carbon layup.
